How the Play Relates to its Audience
In its original context, the play related to its audience though its appeals to women. It emphasizes the strength of women and their dedication to their religious beliefs at this time, thus emitting the message that faith is a virtue people should fight for and maintain. Though the three virgin sisters die, their piety and devotion to their beliefs supposedly led them to Heaven. These women were paradigms for how women should have behaved back then in order to gain salvation.
Dulcitius seems to be a morality play, or one that examines how ordinary people deal with temptation (in this instance, the longing to change someone's ideals for personal gain). Assuming this play was being read by more than simply women, this play could also be commemorative, and designed to teach men a lesson: don't mess with women. However, the play does not directly address who it is targeting, and it is doubtful many women were successfully convincing men to leave them alone at this time in history...
Though there is undeniably some humor in this play, it is overall quite tragic. Three innocent girls are killed at the hands of men because they refuse to go against their faith.
